Sewage in a basement is the one water event where the correct first move is to leave the room and close the door. Not because the volume is worse, but because what is in the water changes every decision that follows.
Keep everyone out and stop air movement
Sewage carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Handling it is a containment problem, not a mopping problem.
Get everyone out of the affected area, including pets. Anyone immunocompromised, pregnant, elderly, or very young should stay well away entirely.
Then stop moving air between that space and the rest of the house. Do not run the furnace fan, which will distribute contaminated air through every duct in the building. Do not point a household fan at the water. Close interior doors. If there is a cold air return in the basement, that is a direct path upstairs.
Stop adding to it
Stop using water upstairs. Every flush, every sink, every load of laundry adds volume to a system that is already backing up because it cannot accept more.
This is counterintuitive during a crisis and it matters. Household water use is often what turns a small backup into a large one while everyone is downstairs looking at it.
Why household cleanup fails here
A shop vac aerosolises contaminants into the air you are standing in. A mop spreads material across surfaces and into the mop water. Bleach poured onto standing sewage does not sanitise it and produces fumes in an enclosed space.
The equipment gap is real. Professional response uses containment barriers, negative air pressure, protective equipment, extraction that isolates the waste stream, and disposal routes that household waste collection does not offer.
What comes out of the building
Porous materials that contacted sewage are removed rather than cleaned, because cleaning cannot reach through the material structure to where contaminants sit.
- Carpet and pad, without exception.
- Drywall, cut to a line above the contamination.
- Batt insulation in any wall cavity that was reached.
- Particleboard, MDF, and the bases of most built-in cabinets.
- Upholstered furniture, mattresses, and soft goods.
- Cardboard and paper storage.
Non-porous materials generally stay: concrete, sealed masonry, tile, metal, glass, and hard plastics can be cleaned and disinfected properly.
Why the bill is higher than a clean-water job
It is not the extraction. It is the demolition, the protective equipment, the containment setup, and regulated disposal of contaminated material that cannot go in a normal skip. A sewage job of the same depth and area as a clean-water job removes far more material.
Finding the cause afterwards
Backups have a small set of causes: a blocked lateral between the house and the main, root intrusion into that lateral, a municipal main that surcharged during heavy rain, or a failed backflow prevention device.
The distinction matters for both the repair and the insurance claim. A private lateral blockage is your responsibility; a surcharged municipal main may not be. Either way it is worth having the lateral scoped after the cleanup, because a backup that happened once because of an existing blockage will happen again.
